Hawaii Magazine question... please help

Post by cballs on Sun Dec 16, 2012 6:53 pm

I am a SERIOUS buyer looking to purchase a super v. been browsing for years, but haven't pulled the trigger. Here is the problem, I live in Hawaii. Although a nice place to live a bad place to be a firearm enthusiast. Here in the state we can have hi capacity rifle magazines, drums, 30 rds, etc... But when it comes to handguns, ehr, 10 rds max.

Since the vector uses glock compatible mags i could only own the ten rounders. ARRGGHHH. Takes the fun out of blowing away targets with smg style carbine. So I have had this crazy good idea. What if the mags were modified permanently so that they would work in the vector, but not in a glock. Thus making them a rifle and not a handgun magazine. Is this possible or even already done?

The only thought I have had was to create a notch/cutout in the magazine well of the vector then weld or permanently attach a "nub" on the side of the mag that would fit into the notch. But when inserted into a glock the "nub" would prevent the magazine from fitting in any way, no matter the force applied. Or attach the nub on the side where the cutouts already are of the vectors magwell.

So, problems I forsee is the depths of the magwell of the vector and the glock, are they the same? Could something be permanently attached to the magazine that could not come off, how? Would a certified gunsmith or kriss have to do the work, or a competent home smith be able to do it? etc...

Please give me your thoughts!!!

Here is a link to Hawaii's statute, it's section c that refers to the ten round handgun mag capacity...

I dont see a way of doing that.

(c) The manufacture, possession, sale, barter, trade, gift, transfer, or acquisition of detachable ammunition magazines with a capacity in excess of ten rounds which are designed for or capable of use with a pistol is prohibited. This subsection shall not apply to magazines originally designed to accept more than ten rounds of ammunition which have been modified to accept no more than ten rounds and which are not capable of being readily restored to a capacity of more than ten rounds

You almost need some mags that are engraved for rifle use only
write them a letter asking that you had some 25 round mags marked or engraveled for rifle use only.

Thanks for the reply, the only concern is that the mags would still be "capable" of working with the glocks, the engraving is a good idea to solidify that the mag is for the vector carbine only, but I would have to eliminate the "capability" of the glock. At least as I understand it, law interpreters (attorney's) may see things differently...

So another question, what are the glock mags made out of (I am not too familiar with them, as I own AR10, 1911, Browning Buckmark).

ok, further study shows that the mags are polymer clad. The polymer used for glock frames is a nylon 6 base. So I think that one could take a nylon 6 rod, the diameter of the cutout on the super v's magwell, and weld the rod on using a friction weld (spin welding). Then cut off the excess rod smooth and polish and voila, super v only mags. What do guys think?

also what is the diameter of the cutout located on the bottom/sides of the magwell?

Very interesting idea. Looking forward to what you come up with.

sounds like you are going to jail if an office pulls you over and you have those mags in hawaii, notch or no notch.

You will have one big problem with your plan. If you mod your magazine to just fit your CRB it will still fit the SDP which of course is concidered a pistol.

Edit: never mind I reread your post and saw that your were going to mod the mag well as well as the magazine.

Yeah, that is probably the best idea to get it legitimatized, IF it's possible at all...

that is a great point... technically ar15 magazines are illegal here because there exists an ar15 pistol. it is called out specifically in the statutes with a few other firearms because the magazine's share the "capability" of the ar15 "assault pistol".

Although... 60% of owners here have at least one, and nothing is ever said about it (thank goodness!) Our system is so screwed...
