New SDP shooting low through factory iron sights

Post by CrashOmatic on Fri Apr 05, 2013 1:44 pm

Hi,
I have a new SDP that's shoots low at any distance. I have adjusted the front sight as low as it can go and it still shoots 3in low at 25 yds. Several people have shot the Kriss and its shooting low. On the good side 450 rds without one failure. The Kriss even will eject live rounds. So any ideas on my issue? Is a red dot sight the answer?
Thanks

I know red dots you adjust the sight to move bullet impact. But not sure if raising the front sight would help.

Are you looking through the aperture in the rear sight? I discovered mine was sighted in using the post on top of the rear sight. ;)
Haven't tried to adjust the sights, I need to get an AR front sight tool.

Kriss owners have a couple inherent problems with the stock irons that come with the Vector. The sights are not made for the Vector's height over bore with such a short sight radius (top rail length). The sights are also really made as peep sights as they are standard PRI's with Vector's name etched in them. Bottom line is they are AR BUIS. When used on a Vector carbine they are not too bad but suck on the pistol. The only thing you can do on the pistol is lower the front post all the way down and use the rear notch, not the peep aperture. Some people have even filed the post down even more. I prefer quality red dots and use the supplied irons as BUIS Only.

Then again this is just my opinion and experience,

MadDog,

I have only shot the SDP once but found adjusting the gun seemed to make a difference.

Watch the video in this link. At 7:50 mins into the video is where I shoot the SDP for the first time.

My CBR shoots extremely low as well with the diamond iron sights... I'm assuming the first step in trying to correct this would be to screw the front post all the way down? Next will be a red dot

Yes to bring the point of impact up, screw the front sight down. You may even have to file some of the front sight post off to get them where you like them. I would suggest some sort of an optic anyway. The sights that come with the Kriss are BUIS anyway and were really made for AR's. The Kriss is considered a CQB weapon and the sights were designed as a more precise "peep" sight for a rifle. Kriss just ordered up the sights from Diamondhead with shorter front posts and had their name laser etched in them. They were made for a weapon with a much "longer" sight radius. With such a short sight radius you need to move the sight post a lot to effect just a "little" change.

As said here --- http://www.krisstalk.com/t766-broken-mag

"No pics of the front sight, but I believe that you couldn't tell one from the other unless you measured the front sight post. The post is too long. According to Kriss, Diamondhead shipped the wrong sights and QC didn't catch it until several weapons left manufacturing. Kind of poopoos the notion that they're bore sighting every weapon prior to each weapon leaving the plant."

3rd time out ... iron sights way low

Post by jonj313 on Sun Apr 21, 2013 11:06 pm

Took my SBR out for the third time yesterday with my 11 year old daughter. Nice to see keeping the bolt back for the last three weeks made it easy enough for even her to rack it. My main goal this visit was to zero in my iron sights. Gotta tell you they were really low. Took at least 12 clicks of the front sight post to even get close at 30ft. Finally got the iron sights and Eotech sighted in and I gotta tell you... TAC-DRIVER!!!!! ... My SBR is becoming more of a pleasure to shoot every time out......Cant believe I still have 4 to 5 more months for my stamp.. Hopefully these new inspectors I heard of make a difference!!!!!

M3 Aimpoint issue / Range report

Post by Jiman on Fri Apr 26, 2013 4:15 pm

I'm a relatively new owner of an SDP. I've put around 800 rounds through it so far. I have a lot of trigger time on subguns...MP-5 (9mm & 40), UMP, MP7, etc...

I've gone through the "normal" charging issues and occasional FTF /FTE. It's running a lot better lately.

So today I decided I'd put an M3 Aimpoint on it, as I'm not really liking the Diamond iron sights that came with mine. I took the Aimpoint off an M4 platform. It was relatively quick to zero at 25 yds. I was shooting Federal 230 FMJ. It was easy to keyhole my shots into a ragged hole into paper at that distance.

Problem is, when I went to 35, 50, and 75 yds...the last being the limits of the pistol range I was at....in order to hit a 12 X12" steel chest plate, I had to aim almost a foot low to hit steel at 50 yds. I was basically having to aim mid-way up the vertical stand, which was about 10-12" low of the plate. Aiming dead on the plate put my shots high in the dirt/berm. Once I started aiming low, it was no problem ringing the steel consistently.

I will say I'm relatively new to shooting 45 ACP and knowing it's ballistics. Most of the calibers I'm familiar with are 9mm, 40, 5.56, and 7.62.

With that said, I can't wrap my head around why the round is impacting so high as I go further out. I'd think the opposite. Normally I would have to aim a little higher to account for the bullet drop in other calibers....not aim lower.

The first thing that comes to mind is that maybe my Aimpoint is off, but it works fine on my M4. I’ll also add that I didn’t have the time today to try zeroing the Aimpoint at 50 yds and seeing what it would do as I worked my way closer (25, 15, 10 yds).

What are your thoughts?

Thanks Rob

Your Aimpoint is not off. The 45ACP is not a flat shooter compared to 5.56 and will arc. Your problem is with a 25 yard zero and the Aimpoints height over bore. If your optics reticle or dot sits 4 or 5 inches above the bore and you are zeroed at 25 yards, then the farther out you go the higher the bullet impact will be until the bullet starts to drop (about 75 yards or so). I don't know how to draw a picture on a computer so I can't visually show you what is happening. If you zero your SDP at 50 yards then you will have to hold the dot just a few inches high at closer ranges.

Not sure if this helps, but your optic is just fine. This is the nature of the beast.

Here you go, LOTS of good info. in this thread!

http://www.krisstalk.com/t581-at-what-range-are-you-zeroed-with-your-eotech-red-dot?highlight=zero+range

I finally got a front sight tool, and got mine bore-sighted on the peep sight now with the laser (instead of the top post...). If/when I can get to the outdoor range, I'll probably try sighting mine in at about 50 yds, maybe an inch or two high according to the info. in that thread I just linked.

I had to crank the front sight WAAYYY down, but it seems to have worked...

Hey thanks for the quick reply guys. I'm at the range again next week, so I'll try your suggestions and update.

Solscud007, I may just do that if I don't get used to them. They might be just a little too new school for me.

This is exactly why I have chosen not to "zero" at ANY particular distance, but instead align my red dot on a true parallel line so I don't have to aim high for short distances and aim low for long distances. i simply aim about 4 inches high (the exact height of the sight in relation to the barrel) and in ALL circumstances and I'm spot on. Easier for my brain to do it that way at least it's consistent.

Went to the range today with my CBR... Was fairly nervousness to see if my vector would be any better. For it was five feet low at 25yrds last time. Screwed the front post all the way in (down). Happy to say my vector ripped. 5 inch hole at 25yrds shooting almost 200 rounds....

Lol I that's why I haven't called. I know they cashed my check and that's all that matters at this point. A good friend of mine has gotten 3 things back recently and it took all 3 things almost exactly 6months from the day he mailed the form out. 1 month after the check was cashed it went into review.

i was kinda amazed at same, i had delta point on detach rail, it was way high, i zero 25' and it was 10" high at 35', it was high because the round is still on the upward arc making up for the site height, like was said above, i put delta right on kriss rail and zero at 50', its pretty close from 10-50' now, i have dp w/ chevron, so at 50' top of triangle is zero and about 30' the bottom is, its 7.5 moa so..math..whtever..get your site height as low as possible and push zero out to decrease arc.
